There is a common thread across all cultures; one that connects, entertains, explains, and illuminates. That common thread is the arts. In any culture, the arts are an essential part of life. Whether it is music, drama, dance, or a fine arts discipline, there is little doubt of the value each adds to us as individuals and to our culture as a whole.

The secondary school is a microcosm of society, and within its walls the arts play a vital role. Students enjoy dancing, performing, drawing, singing, and expanding spatial limits. They benefit in many ways from these activities. Educators and parents have long known of the many advantages that arts provide in schools and continue to push for vibrant arts education programs and curricula.

While other benefits of an arts-rich education have been known for some time (including transfer of skills, attitudes, and abilities to other study areas), research is now beginning to show that there may be a connection between the arts and reading achievement. This applies to all of the arts disciplines.

This module provides research, background, and practical strategies for using the fine and performing arts in innovative ways at the secondary school level to motivate and enhance student learning.
