Chapter 1: Introduction

The term fine and performing arts refers to visual arts, dance, drama, and music. Traditionally, visual arts and music receive the majority of attention in education, but in fact, all four disciplines are considered essential and all are equal in their ability to positively impact student achievement.

This introductory chapter:

  • identifies the benefits of the fine and performing arts in education.
  • briefly recounts the historical context of arts in education.
  • focuses attention on the arts and secondary students.
  • shares overall objectives for this module.
